Google Local Services Ads: Are They Worth It for Tampa Businesses?

For most Tampa home-service businesses, yes. You pay per lead, not per click, and your ad sits at the top of Google. They work best when you answer fast and keep reviews coming.

For most Tampa Bay home-service businesses, yes. Google Local Services Ads put you at the top of Google Search and Maps, you pay for a lead instead of a click, and you don't need a website or keyword list. They pay off when you answer calls fast, keep collecting reviews and track which leads become booked jobs.

What are Google Local Services Ads, and where do they show up?

Local Services Ads are a separate ad format from the text ads most people picture when they hear "Google Ads." Instead of writing headlines and picking keywords, you build a profile (services, service area, hours, reviews, verification badge), and Google shows it when someone nearby searches for what you do, like "AC repair near me" in St. Petersburg.

Google says LSAs show only on Google Search and Google Maps. Google says they appear at the very top of results for service-related searches. Customers call or message you straight from the ad.

One recent change to know about: Google is moving Local Services Ads into the main Google Ads platform as a special kind of Performance Max campaign built around pay-per-lead goals. That move began in August 2026 with categories like plumbing, HVAC, electrical and moving, and service-area businesses without a storefront are scheduled for late 2026. Google says the ads keep the same positions on Search and Maps and you still pay per lead. What changes is where you manage budgets, bids and lead replies. The details are still rolling out. Remaining categories and non-US accounts move in 2027, and for now new advertisers still sign up through the regular Local Services Ads flow.

Does my Tampa business qualify?

LSAs are only available in certain countries and service categories. In the US, Google lists more than 200 categories. Home services are the biggest group, and a few categories are only offered in some states, Florida among them. If you're a roofer, HVAC contractor, plumber, electrician or pest control company, your category is likely covered. The quickest way to confirm is to start the sign-up and see whether your service and ZIP codes come up.

What happened to the Google Guaranteed and Google Screened badges?

If you've read older articles about LSAs, they probably explain the difference between "Google Guaranteed" (home services) and "Google Screened" (professional services). That's out of date. In late 2025, Google replaced those badges with one badge for every advertiser: Google Verified.

Two things changed for home-service businesses:

  • One badge for everyone. Businesses that already met the verification requirements were moved to the Google Verified badge automatically. New advertisers earn it by completing Google's screening and verification.
  • No more money-back guarantee. The Google Guarantee came with a reimbursement program for customers. Google has discontinued it, so the badge now tells customers you've passed Google's checks. It no longer promises them a refund.

The badge still matters: Google places listings without it below providers that have it.

How do I get verified, and how long does it take?

The checks depend on your category and location. For a typical US home-service business, expect some combination of:

  • Background checks on the business, its owners and, in some categories, field workers. These cover identity and criminal history, and at the company level, civil litigation history. Google says businesses aren't charged for the background check.
  • License checks. Google checks state-level licenses against state databases where it can. You confirm that you hold any county and city licenses you need.
  • Insurance checks. In categories that require insurance, you upload a certificate of insurance that meets Google's minimum. The insured name has to match the name on your LSA account, and the certificate must be valid for at least 14 days after you submit it.
  • Business registration. In the US this is usually a D-U-N-S number. A state business registration or EIN can sometimes stand in for it.
  • Google Business Profile ownership. The person completing the checks needs to be an owner or manager of the business's profile.

Google doesn't publish a single timeline, but some steps have known waits. Getting a D-U-N-S number can take up to 30 days. Businesses approved through accelerated verification have 14 days to finish the remaining steps. If you're turned down, you have to wait 30 days to reapply. Get verified in the off-season, not the week a storm is forecast.

How am I charged for Local Services Ads?

You pay per lead, not per click or per view. Google describes valid leads as:

  • An answered phone call where you talk with the customer (phone leads have to meet a minimum call length)
  • A voicemail
  • A text message or email (counted as leads in the US and Canada)
  • Under the new Performance Max setup, a return call to a missed connection

Lead prices vary by location, job type, lead type and bid strategy, and Google says message leads usually cost less than phone leads. Google doesn't publish a standard price, and we won't guess one. Your cost per lead in Pinellas or Hillsborough will depend on your category and how much competition you have.

Budgets are also changing with the move to Google Ads. Weekly budgets become daily averages (your weekly budget divided by seven). Monthly spend is capped at your daily average times 30.4. Manual bidding, such as setting a maximum cost per lead, is going away. A single campaign-level target cost per lead takes its place.

What if I get charged for a bad lead?

Google screens leads when the customer first makes contact and doesn't charge for leads it decides are invalid. Its models also keep reviewing charged leads and can issue credits automatically if a lead later turns out to be low quality. Google says most credits reach your account balance within 30 days. The original charge still shows on your invoice.

Google no longer credits leads just because they were for a job type or area you don't serve, so keep your service list and area accurate. Rate every lead in the leads section. That feedback tunes future leads, and Google may credit ones you report as poor quality.

How does Google decide who shows up first?

LSAs run on an auction, but your bid is only part of it. Google lists these factors:

  • Your bid and bidding strategy
  • The search itself: what service the customer needs, their location and the time
  • Responsiveness: how fast you answer calls and messages. Google says missed calls can hurt you.
  • Profile quality: your star rating, number of reviews, average response time, good photos and completed verification
  • Relevance: the services you list and your business bio
  • Lead types enabled: turning on message and booking leads gives customers more ways to reach you

Google also says better profiles, including ones with photos, may rank higher and may pay less per lead. Reviews now live on your Google Business Profile instead of in the LSA account, which makes our guide to ranking higher on Google Maps directly relevant here too. Depending on your category, you may need at least five reviews before your ad will show.

We break down regular search ads in Google Ads for Tampa businesses: is paid search worth it?

Should I run both at the same time?

Often, yes. They show in different spots on the same results page, so running both takes up more of the screen. Use LSAs for broad, urgent searches like "AC repair" or "roof leak." Use search ads for the high-value services you want more of, like full roof replacements or new HVAC systems, and send those clicks to a page built for that service. Track both against booked jobs.

Tips to get more out of Local Services Ads in Tampa Bay

  1. Answer fast, every time. Responsiveness is a ranking factor, so have someone covering the phone while you're on a job.
  2. Keep your hours accurate. Google measures your message response time within your listed business hours. If you don't set hours, it uses 7 AM to 9 PM. Hours you can't actually cover will hurt your numbers.
  3. Ask every happy customer for a review. Rating and review count both affect ranking.
  4. Plan for the seasons. In Tampa Bay, HVAC calls pick up when the summer heat sets in, and roofers, tree services and water-damage companies get busy around storms during hurricane season (June 1 through November 30). Raise your budget ahead of your busy season.
  5. Rate and flag bad leads every week.
  6. Track booked jobs, not just leads. Mark each lead booked or not in your CRM or a spreadsheet. One lead that becomes a roof replacement beats three cheap calls that never book.

When are Local Services Ads not a good fit?

  • Your category isn't eligible, or you can't pass the license, insurance or background checks for it yet.
  • Nobody can answer the phone. Missed calls drop your ranking.
  • You only want one specific, high-ticket job. LSAs match you to your whole category. If you only want new roofs and never repairs, search ads with tight keywords give you more control.
  • Your reviews are thin. Fix your review flow first.
  • You're fully booked. Lower the budget or pause.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a website to run Google Local Services Ads?

No. Customers contact you straight from the ad by phone or message. You'll still want a good website for people who check you out first.

Is the Google Guaranteed badge still around?

No. In late 2025 Google replaced Google Guaranteed and Google Screened with one Google Verified badge and ended the money-back guarantee. Businesses that were already verified moved to the new badge automatically.

Will my Local Services Ads stop working when Google moves them into Google Ads?

Google says migrated campaigns keep showing in the same spots on Search and Maps, and you still pay per lead. Google emails account admins 14 days and again 7 days before the migration. Download your old performance reports before then, because historical reports don't carry over.
